Design IP Critical to Gen-Z Enablement

IntelliProp’s belief in the promise of Gen-Z led to the decision to develop licensable silicon design IP necessary to enable products that attach to the Gen-Z Fabric. IntelliProp has developed and is licensing silicon design IP allowing customers to start their Gen-Z developments today. This IP includes Physical Layer IP, Link Layer IP, Upper Layer IP (responders, requesters, and switch), and ZMMU IP.
Why did IntelliProp decide to join the Gen-Z Consortium?
IntelliProp felt that Gen-Z had the potential to address significant issues being faced in the datacenter. IntelliProp’s expertise in memory, controller design and high performance protocol bridging was a good match for the types of technology that was going to be required.
What are IntelliProp’s goals as a Consortium member?
IntelliProp has taken the lead in the development of Gen-Z Design IP. We see this IP as a key to enabling the evaluation of the Gen-Z technology and to help the Consortium provide industry demonstrations showcasing Gen-Z. IntelliProp also has provided an IP evaluation program allowing Consortium members to develop Proof of Concept evaluations. IntelliProp will continue to support the Consortium demo activity to ensure the Consortium is able to demonstrate to the industry the features and flexibility that Gen-Z will bring to the industry.
Does IntelliProp currently have any Gen-Z products available?
IntelliProp has released the following Gen-Z Design IP. This IP is applicable to Gen-Z product designs in FPGA or ASIC:
- Gen-Z Requester
- Gen-Z Responder
- Gen-Z Link Layer Protocol
- Gen-Z Physical Layer, 25G E-NRZ local and fabric
- Gen-Z Switch
- Gen-Z Requester ZMMU
IntelliProp also has a Gen-Z Fabric DRAM Memory Controller targeted to those wishing to build high capacity DRAM Memory modules.
What is the importance of early IP development for new protocols, like Gen-Z?
Interpretation and instantiation of the specifications is a key learning curve for any new protocol and is especially important for Gen-Z memory fabric, where reliability and performance are impactful and visible to the applications. The availability of proven intellectual property reduces risk and enables implementations to focus on functional value additions for the Gen-Z ecosystem. As the ecosystem continues to evolve and grow, early IP development is crucial not only for innovation, but for streamlining the design process and enabling the next generation of Gen-Z products.
What does IntelliProp feel is the importance of open standards in the computing industry?
Open standards are important to provide an industry specification on which interoperability can be based. Open standards also increase the speed of critical developments as well as the speed of industry adoption.
How does IntelliProp see Gen-Z technology revolutionizing the industry over the next 5-10 years?
Gen-Z will enable low latency DRAM/SCM memory sharing and the making of composable fabrics easier. Users will be able to dynamically add or remove memory to existing servers without bringing down their online servers for maintenance. Capital expenses go down as memory usage is more efficient as servers can share otherwise unused, or stranded memory thus reducing overall operational costs. Operational costs are lowered as individual memory or compute resources can be powered down when not needed, then dynamically powered on as workload demand shifts.
