The Gen-Z Micro Development Kit (µDK) is now available from member company SMART Modular Technologies with IP from IntelliProp. The µDK is a standalone hardware platform that includes all necessary hardware and software components required to test and develop the Gen-Z protocol ecosystem. The small form-factor software development kit is optimized for cost, size and flexibility of fabrics, and allows for Linux subsystem development and testing.
The included ARM-based Linux host card can perform load/store native Gen-Z access to a Gen-Z Memory Module (ZMM). The ARM host and ZMM are connected via backplane and cable, allowing the Linux ARM host to access up to three ZMMs.
The Gen-Z µDK is the smallest and simplest platform that allows the development and testing of Gen-Z in-band management and fabric software, as well as Gen-Z memory-centric computing applications. Flexible cabling types allow for various topologies.
There are several recognized applications of the Gen-Z µDK, including (but not limited to):
- Aid the development of a Gen-Z software ecosystem like Linux framework and drivers for Gen-Z devices, including bridges, switches, and media endpoints
- Support testing of advanced Gen-Z protocol features like collectives, atomics, coherency, and buffer ops
- Validate and test memory access load/store latencies over Gen-Z fabric
- Out-of-box reference design for end-use case demo purposes
The latest HPC models and artificial intelligence/machine learning workloads require large memory pools to store data sets. This trend has led to an industry shift toward fabric-based interconnects — like RDMA, NVMe-oF, and now Gen-Z. Gen-Z serial attached ZMM memory increases memory bandwidth per core, increasing overall system performance.
The µDK is a complete system that allows developers to run and test load store memory accesses to a device across the Gen-Z fabric. The dev kit comes with hardware and software components configured together to work out-of-box in a form factor. Components include an Orthus ARM Host Card for load/store and ARM-based A53 Quad Core Processing System, Gen-Z 3-port backplane, Gen-Z Memory Module (ZMM), Gen-Z 41C DAC cable (100Gbps), Gen-Z µDK fixture with power supply, and Xilinx FPGA programmer USB cable. All Gen-Z IP is provided by IntelliProp.
